Fund: Michael and Donna Goldware Endowed Scholarship Fund Department: SOM Gifts Endow Schol Dept D02008 Purpose: Graduate or Undergraduate Student Support Fund Purpose: This Fund shall be used to provide Mission Award scholarship assistance to a student(s) in the School of Medicine. Mission Award Scholarships provide an additional incentive for students who receive their medical degree from UCR to remain and practice in Inland Southern California. In return for accepting a Mission Award, the awardee agrees to practice in San Bernardino, Riverside, or Imperial Counties for a period of service, of not less than five years, upon completion of their residency. Awardees must practice medicine in one of the following short-supply specialties: Pediatrics, Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, General Internal Medicine, OB/GYN, General Surgery or Psychiatry. Failure to meet these requirements will automatically result in the conversion of awarded funds into a loan that must be repaid by the awardee. Criteria and Selection Process This Fund shall be used to provide Mission Award Scholarships to medical students who have expressed interest and passion for leadership and service to underserved communities in the Inland Empire. The process of identifying recipients will be determined by the School of Medicine Scholarship Committee in compliance with the Mission Award program on an annual basis and preference will be given to medical student(s) who commit to practicing post-residency within 15 miles of the city of Riverside. In years when there is no candidate who meets the criteria, awards will be held until the following year. BACKGROUND Michael and Donna Goldware are longtime members of the Riverside community. Over the years, whenever a member of their family has needed solid medical help, they have appreciated that help has been received from local providers without having to leave the Inland Empire nor, in most cases, Riverside. It is with this in mind that the Goldwares want to help ensure others in their community with medical needs, now and in the future, will be able to count on quality medical providers to the same degree that they have experienced.
