Fund: Margaret Hoyt Stratford Endowed Scholarship Fund Department: CHASS Student Affairs D01010 Purpose: Undergraduate Student Support Background: Carol Stratford and Janet Stratford Davis, sisters who serve as co-trustees of the Poorman Hoyt Stratford Foundation, established this endowed scholarship in memory of their mother, Margaret Hoyt Stratford. Margaret "Peggy" Hoyt was a third-generation Californian who grew up on a ranch in the San Jacinto Valley. She was a graduate of San Jacinto High School and went on to graduate from Mount Saint Mary's College (Los Angeles), where she majored in English. In the mid-1950's, Peggy and her husband Milton Stratford moved to Riverside, where they raised their two daughters. Peggy believed in breadth of education. She placed great importance on learning about a variety of subjects rather than narrowing in on a single trade or topic. The intent of this scholarship is to honor Peggy's memory by encouraging its recipients in the quest for a well-read, thoughtful, and empathic world view.
