Fund: Ning Moeller Memorial Endowed Scholarship for Biology Fund Department: Evolution Ecology & Orgns Bio Dept D01046 Purpose: Undergraduate Student Support Fund Purpose: This Fund shall be used to provide undergraduate scholarships for students in the Department of Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology (EEOB) majoring in Biology. Criteria and Selection Process: This Fund shall be administered by the Department Chair of EEOB, or their designee, who will determine award candidates and make the final recipient selection(s) each year. Student candidates must be Biology majors and may self-nominate, or be nominated by CNAS faculty for consideration. Background: Curt and Maria "Ning" Moeller met as undergraduate students at Rutgers University, where their connection quickly grew. After graduation, they moved to Riverside, California, where Curt pursued his PhD in cell biology as part of Bill Thomson's lab. During this time, Ning earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology and went on to complete her Master's degree. As a master's student, she excelled as a teaching assistant in microbiology and contributed to research in fertilization. Their years in Riverside were filled with friendship, learning, and cherished memories. Ning's professional career reflected her ambition and intellect. She began at Fisher Scientific and later transitioned to a role as a sales representative at IBM. Driven to expand her expertise, Ning earned an MBA from Harvard University, further solidifying her place as a leader in her field. After Curt completed his PhD, the couple moved to the Bay Area, where he undertook a postdoctoral position at PCRI (Plant Cell Research Institute). Together, they raised their daughter, Holly, whose academic and professional accomplishments reflect her parents' dedication to education and hard work. Holly is currently a professor of mathematical biology at UCSB. Tragically, Ning passed away in 2003 at the age of 47, a loss deeply felt by her family, friends, and colleagues. Her remarkable legacy endures through her family, her achievements, and the countless lives she touched. Curt and Holly now wish to establish the Ning Moeller Memorial Endowed Scholarship for Biology Fund in loving memory of their beloved wife and mother.
