Criteria and Selection Process

At the direction of the Chair of the Department of the History of Art and the appropriate faculty, incoming or continuing graduate students from the program will be selected to receive the Christopher C. Mead Fellowship in the History of Art, Architecture, and Material Culture. Awards will be based on both academic achievement and academic potential, and will be used to support a range of graduate student needs that include but are not limited to: recruitment of promising students; coursework and museum internships related to their studies; research, writing, and travel related to the completion of a master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation.

Students must be in good academic standing.

Preference will be given to students who are studying any aspect of architecture, urbanism, the built environment, and/or related artifacts from the early modern era (16th century) to the present, with an emphasis in cross- cultural research on how people make their place in a multipolar world.

Should no candidate meet this criterion during a given academic year, the fellowship may be awarded to students investigating cross-cultural topics in other fields of art history.

Up to two fellowships may be awarded annually. A student may receive the award only once, though exceptions can be considered in the case of particularly meritorious students. In years when no candidate meets the criteria, awards will be held until the following year.
