Fund: Dr. Thomas Halsey Endowed Scholarship Fund Department: Physics and Astronomy Dept D01057 Purpose: Undergraduate Student Support BACKGROUND Dr. Thomas C. Halsey graduated from UC Riverside with a B.S. in Physics in 1980 and earned his Ph.D. at Harvard in 1984. Dr. Halsey has been an executive at Exxon Mobil for over 23 years and is the company’s Chief Computation Scientist and his teams focus on the applications of data science in the petroleum industry, physics of geological phenomena, and statistical physics. Dr. Halsey is very pleased with the education he received at UC Riverside and has supported students in UC Riverside’s Department of Physics for twenty-one years. This fund will honor his legacy by supporting Physics majors in good academic standing. Fund Purpose: The expendable distributions from this Fund shall be used to provide annual scholarship support for undergraduate students in the Department of Physics. Criteria and Selection Process The College of Natural & Agricultural Sciences’ Scholarship Committee will select undergraduate student(s) who meet the following criteria: 1. Are undergraduates students majoring in Physics. 2. Have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The minimum scholarship amount for any single student recipient will be $1,000. In years when there are no candidates who meet the criteria, the scholarships will be held until the following year. If/when the fund meets the minimum to become endowed, as the endowment grows the number of scholarships awarded each year may increase.
