Undergraduate Student Support

BACKGROUND:
The Society of Cosmetic Chemists was founded in 1945 to promote high standards of practice in
cosmetic sciences. They serve as a focus and provide the proper forums for the exchange of ideas and new developments in cosmetic research and technology. By promoting research in cosmetic science and industry, and by setting high ethical, professional and educational standards, they reach their goal of improving the qualifications of cosmetic scientists. Their mission is to further the interests and recognition of cosmetic scientists while maintaining the confidence of the public in the cosmetic and toiletries industry. The California Chapter has over 600 active members and is establishing this scholarship that focuses on providing financial assistance to ensure students interested in pursuing a career in the cosmetic sciences have access to quality education.

Fund purpose: This Fund shall be used to provide student support for undergraduates in STEM disciplines related to the cosmetics and personal care industry.

Criteria and Selection Process
The selection process shall be administered by the College of Natural & Agricultural Sciences annually, and the award shall be used to provide student support for one or more students who meet the following criteria:

1. An undergraduate student majoring in lab-based STEM disciplines applicable to the cosmetics and personal care industry.
2. Good academic standing with the university.
3. Interest in pursuing a career in the cosmetic industry.
4. Sophomore, Junior, or Senior level
5. Submit a 500 – 1000 word essay describing your interest in the personal care industry or a topic determined by the California Society of Cosmetic Chemistry.
6. Preference will be given to students who have at any time held a free student membership of the Society of Cosmetic Chemistry.
7. Preference will be given to students who are the first in their family to attend college
8. Additional consideration will be given to students who exhibit financial need.

In years when there is no candidate who meets the criteria, awards will be held until
the following year.
