Thy B. Bui Scholarship for UCDC Endowed Fund

Department:

SPP Dean's Office Dept D01313

Purpose:

Undergraduate Student Support

BACKGROUND
Thy B. Bui earned her B.A. in Spanish language and political science from UCR in 2004. She is now an attorney in private practice specializing in employment law. As a UCR student, she participated in the UCDC program during the summer quarter, which was a transformative experience that cemented her interest in a legal career. It was one of the highlights of her time at UCR, taught her essential life skills, and helped her realize that there is much more to learning than what can be taught in a classroom.

To help future generations of UCR students participate in this impactful program, Thy is establishing this scholarship to support UCDC participants who may find it difficult to leave UCR for a quarter because of the additional expense of traveling to and living in Washington, D.C. She hopes that students who benefit from the scholarship take the opportunity to make the most out of their experience and discover a life-long love of exploration and learning, just as she did.

Fund Purpose: This Fund shall be used to provide student support for undergraduate students participating in the UCDC program.

Criteria and Selection Process
The awardee will be selected annually.

The scholarship shall be used to provide support for students meeting the Requirements:
1. An undergraduate student participating in the UCDC program
2. A student with demonstrated financial need

Preferences:
3. A student who holds one or more jobs while attending UCR and who may have to temporarily lose that income in order to participate in UCDC. Currently, UCR’s awarding policy includes an $8,500-$10,000 self-help amount, which means that many students take out loans and/or work in order to cover this amount each year. Leaving campus for a quarter may impact a student’s ability to cover these costs, and this award could help while allowing a student to participate in the UCDC program with less financial worry.

Students should be asked to submit an essay/personal narrative to be considered for this scholarship.

The Dean of the School of Public Policy, or his/her designee, may appoint a committee to review and select recipients from the pool of eligible candidates.

In years when there are no candidates who meet the criteria, awards may be held until the following year when there is an eligible candidate.
