BACKGROUND:
Barbara Kerr graduated from UCR in 1968 with her B.A. in English. She then pursued a teaching
credential at CSU Long Beach. She returned to Riverside and worked as a kindergarten and first
grade teacher at RUSD for nearly three decades. She was elected to the California Teachers
Association (CTA) Board of Directors in 1985 and went on to become President of the CTA in
2003, serving two two-year terms until her retirement in 2007. In 2006, Barbara was number
three on the LA Times list of 100 most powerful people in Southern California.
Barbara established the School of Education’s first scholarship for multiple subject credential
students in 2019. In recognition of her continued dedication to Riverside’s next generation of
education leaders, she seeks to now endow the scholarship so that it may be a permanent source
of support for students and cement her legacy in the School of Education.
