Fund: Kirsten's Gift Endowed Scholarship Fund Department: Undergrad Student Financial Aid D02089 Purpose: Undergraduate Student Support BACKGROUND Kirsten Young Semerau graduated from UCR in 1964 with a degree in education and earned her teaching credential. She taught 4th grade for 2 years before becoming a stay-at-home mom to two girls. Soon she found herself a single mom and returned to the workforce. Although she worked full-time she remained a dedicated mom. Family was very important to her, and she made many sacrifices to ensure those around her were well taken care of. She was also a woman who believed in education, whether it was in a classroom, self-taught, or experienced through travel. Kirsten very much understood the hardships of being a single mom, and this fund is named in her honor with the guidance of her daughters, Lael Hawkinson and Erica Den Hartog. Fund Purpose: This fund shall be used to provide undergraduate student support. Criteria and Selection Process This scholarship shall be awarded by the Office of Financial Aid according to the following criteria: 1. Recipient shall be a UCR undergraduate student in good standing, majoring in any subject 2. Preferred recipient shall be an undergraduate student who is a single parent In years when there is no candidate who meets the criteria, awards will be held until the following year.
