Undergraduate Student Support

Fund Purpose: This Fund shall be used to provide support for undergraduate students studying
Latin American language, culture, history, and related disciplines.

BACKGROUND
Francisco Mena-Ayllón, a UCR alumnus, was a distinguished professor of Spanish language and
literature - a multi-talented author, poet, scholar, and artist. He taught Spanish language and
literature courses at UC Riverside, Oberlin College, California State University Chico, Crafton
Hills College and University of Redlands, where he was named professor emeritus. He was an
authority on Spanish poet and playwright Federico García Lorca, and published a scholarly book,
El Tradicionalismo de Federico García Lorca, along with several college textbooks.
The University has created this fund in honor of Dr. Mena-Ayllón and his generous bequest
providing for undergraduate scholarships. The name of the fund honors Dr. Mena-Ayllón’s
wishes in his documented bequest intention with the University. The University determined the
purpose of the fund to align with his interest in Latin American studies.

Criteria and Selection Process
The scholarship shall be awarded annually to students studying Latin American language, culture, history and related disciplines. The Financial Aid Office will select the recipients.

In years when there is no candidate who meets the criteria, awards will be held until the following year.
