Fund: Lisa and Carlos Martinez Endowed Scholarship in the Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences Fund Department: CHASS Dean's Office Dept D01008 Purpose: Undergraduate Student Support BACKGROUND Lisa and Carlos Martinez are both UCR alumni and both worked for the University as well. They are both from the East Los Angeles community of El Sereno and met in middle school. Lisa received her B.A. in Liberal Studies in 1992 and worked at UCR for several years after graduation. Carlos received his B.A. in Sociology in 2000 and worked for UCR throughout his college tenure. Since then, Carlos also completed his MBA from UC Irvine and has had a long career in the financial services sector. He began his career in the area of finance and then in risk management. Lisa continued her career at UC Irvine’s Child Care Services after leaving UCR. Carlos credits UCR for getting him on back on track academically and professionally, providing the foundation for a successful career and a full life. UCR provided Lisa an opportunity to experience her first taste of “adulting” while staying at Lothian dormitory and re-united with a childhood friend on her move-in day during freshman orientation. They have established this endowment as a way to pay it forward and positively impact future generations of CHASS students. Fund Prupose: This Fund shall be used to provide student support for undergraduate students in the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (CHASS). Criteria and Selection Process Under the direction of the Associate Dean of Student Academic Affairs in CHASS, or his/her designee, this Fund shall be used to support undergraduate students in CHASS. The Associate Dean of Student Academic Affairs in CHASS, or his/her designee, may appoint a committee to review and select recipients from the pool of eligible candidates. Recipients shall be identified in the spring quarter with disbursement occurring in the following academic year. The scholarship shall be used to provide support for students meeting the following criteria: Requirements (all criteria must be met): 1. Be an undergraduate level student in CHASS. 2. Be a member of any Asian-American or Hispanic/Latin-American student organization on campus. Preferences: 3. Preference for first-generation college students. 4. Preference for students from Southern California. 5. Preference for graduates of Woodrow Wilson High School in Los Angeles Unified School District. Students should be asked to submit an essay/personal narrative to be considered for this scholarship. Students will be selected on financial need and also prioritized by those that meet the most of all requirements and preferences. In years when there is no candidate who meets the required criteria, a candidate with any of the preferred criteria will be selected. In years when there is no candidate who meets either all required or any preferred criteria, awards will be held until the following year. All preference criteria does not need to be met every year.
