BACKGROUND
The arts and humanities have enriched the lives and travels of Jim and Paula Diederich. Even
though UC Riverside was a small liberal arts college at the time, it provided a rich cultural venue
for them and the community.
Jim is a native of Riverside, CA, and has been a member of the University of California
community since entering UC Riverside as an undergraduate at age 17. He graduated as a
Watkins Award recipient, with honors, and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He received his Ph.D.
in Mathematics in 1970 at UC Riverside, served as a professor at UC Davis until his retirement
in 2004, and continues as a working advisor in the UC Davis Mathematics Project. Despite
having been a math major, Jim credits his classes in art history and the humanities as some of the
most important courses he took. He has expressed that they can greatly enhance your powers of
observation, which can serve you throughout your life, even in your most mundane daily
pursuits.
Jim and Paula are extremely grateful to the University of California for providing so many
opportunities and benefits and wish to support the mission of UC Riverside and the College of
the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences through this gift.
