Dr. Deas, who grew up on a farm in Adams Run, South Carolina, established this scholarship in honor of her parents, with preference given to students who are themselves from rural areas. Says Dr. Deas, "I have seen first-hand the challenges faced by underserved populations, including education, employment and health care. I have dedicated my life, both personally and professionally, to increasing opportunities and advocating for progress. I believe these values align perfectly with the mission of the School of Medicine."

Purpose and Selection:

This fund shall be used to provide awards to medical students, with preference to students from rural areas.

The process of identifying recipients, the number of awards made, and the size of each award will be determined by the School of Medicine Scholarship Committee on an annual basis. The award is renewable if the student is in good academic standing and recommended by the School of Medicine Scholarship Committee.

In years when there is no candidate who meets the criteria, awards will be held until the following year.
