Fund: Mike and Carrie Deas Endowed Scholarship Fund Department: SOM Gifts Endow Schol Dept D02008 Purpose: Graduate Student Support Background: Deborah Deas, MD, MPH, began her tensure as the Mark and Pam Rubin Dean and Chief Executive Officer for Clinical Affairs of the University of California, Riverside School of Medicine, in 2016. Dr. Deas joined UCR from her previous position as interim dean of the College of Medicine and professor of psychiatry at the Medical University of South Carolina, where she served as senior associate dean for medical education, chief academic officer, assosicate dean for admissions, and lead the College of Medicine's committee on accreditation by the Liaison Committee for Medical Education. Dr. Deas, who grew up on a farm in Adams Run, South Carolina, established this scholarship in honor of her parents, with preference given to students who are themselves from rural areas. Says Dr. Deas, "I have seen first-hand the challenges faced by underserved populations, including education, employment and health care. I have dedicated my life, both personally and professionally, to increasing opportunities and advocating for progress. I believe these values align perfectly with the mission of the School of Medicine." Purpose and Selection: This fund shall be used to provide awards to medical students, with preference to students from rural areas. The process of identifying recipients, the number of awards made, and the size of each award will be determined by the School of Medicine Scholarship Committee on an annual basis. The award is renewable if the student is in good academic standing and recommended by the School of Medicine Scholarship Committee.
