Purpose:

Undergraduate Student Support

Purpose: To honor the memory of Dr. Donald C. Young, his family wishes to assist students who have the potential for innovation in the physical sciences and who value education.

Background:
Mrs. Young's husband, Dr. Donald C. Young attended UCR int he early years when it was called "the Harvard of the West" for its emphasis on a classic liberal arts education. He graduated with a BA in chemistry in 1962 and a PhD in chemistry in 1966. He continued as a post-doctoral scholar 1966-68 under the direction of M. Frederick Hawthorne.

Dr. Young was employed by Union Oil Company of California (UNOCAL) Science and Technology for the duration of his career. He had 384 publications in the chemical, petroleum, and agricultural fields including 196 U. S. patents and 179 foreign patents. His capacity for innovation and creativity is reflected in the range of his patents and his achievements. To honor his memory, the family wishes to assist students wo have potential for innovation in the physical sciences and who value education.

General Purpose:
This Fund shall be used to provide scholarships for undergraduate students in Physical Sciences.

Selection:
a. The scholarship committee of the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences will select applicants and the Office of Financial Aid will review selected candidates in compliance with current regulations.
b. The scholarship committee can select students who received the scholarship in previous years.
c. Students with research experience or a desire to pursue research are preferred.
d. Students who are non-traditional shall be given special consideration.
e. Students with both merit and financial need shall be considered
