Department:

Undergrad Student Financial Aid D02089

Purpose:

Undergraduate Student Support

Background:
Pamela Sue Clute was a distinguished alumna of UCR, having earned her BA, MA, secondary teaching credential, and Ph.D. at UCR and she was a long-serving and much beloved faculty member of the University of California, Riverside. Her expertise was in mathematics and education, teaching the love of math and of the STEM fields to generations of undergraduate and graduate students. Dr. Clute was also the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Educational and Community Engagement, the Executive Director of the ALPHA Center, and extremely active with Project Sister, a collaboration of women educators engaged in exploring ways to educate young women for careers in the STEM fields.

Dr. Clute prided herself on being a mathematics motivator, especially to young women, by making mathematics relevant and interesting to learners of all ages. She established the ALPHA Center in 1998 and, through this Center, championed her passion: motivating young people towards success in STEM careers. She is reported to have been the most prolific professor in terms of students taught in UCR's history.

Through the years, she was honored with numerous awards as a faculty member, a proponent of math education, and a member of the greater Riverside community. She served on the UCR Foundation Board of Trustees from 2015 until her passing in 2016. She also could be found regularly in her "Ab Attack" classes, both teaching and participating.

Following her passing, Steve Clute and a number of UCR constituents, made contributions to establish this fund in Pam Clute's memory.

Purpose and Criteria:
The Fund will provide student financial aid to deserving UCR students.

Recipients shall be selected annually by the Financial Aid Office. Available funds should be awarded to low-income, first-generation undergraduate students majoring in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields whose career goals are to become K-12 teachers. More than one student may receive a scholarship each year.

Preference will be given to those who graduated from high school in Riverside or San Bernardino counties, and who are committed to advancing gender equity.
