Purpose:

Undergraduate Student Support

History and Purpose:
Sean and Kristin Varner, lawyers in the law firm of Varner and Brandt, are active civic and business leaders in the Inland Empire. Having both received bachelor's degrees from UCLA, the Varners are deeply committed to education and the community. Sean has been active in supporting athletics, both at UCR and for Riverside youth. Kristin is passionate about her work on health and children's issues. Both of the Varners have served on non-profit boards and are devoted to their children and family.

The Varner Family Endowed Scholarship Fund shall be used to provide scholarship assistance for undergraduate students at UCR with demonstrated financial need.

Selection and Guidelines:
Applicants who meet the criteria are encouraged to apply for this scholarship:
1.) Full time student,
2.) Demonstrate financial need,
3.) Student athlete who has demonstrated leadership on and off the field and exemplary sportsmanship,
4.) Community service involvement, and
5.) Campus involvement.

The UCR Financial Aid Office will receive and pre-screen applications. The essays from this pool of qualified applicants will be sent to the Office of Donor Relations to be shared with the donors for their input to ensure that the selection criteria is being met.

In years when there is no candidate who meets the criteria, awards will be held until the following year.
