History and Purpose:

Dr. Thomas H. Payne received a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Notre Dame in 1967. As a young man, he began a career at UC Riverside that spanned over four decades and impacted hundreds of students. He saw the creation of the Bourns College of Engineering in the early 1990s and used his talents to grow the Computer Science and Engineering Department. Over the years, Dr. Payne served as a trusted faculty member, mentor and friend to countless young people.

In light of Dr. Payne's service to UC Riverside and to recognize the impact he has had on the lives of students, faculty and friends of the university, the Bourns College of Engineering wishes to establish the Dr. Thomas H. Payne Endowed Student Award in Computer Science. This Fund is a testament to the legacy that faculty can leave on the University and its students. As an endowment, this Fund will provide support for generations of deserving students who will in turn become the leaders and innovators of tomorrow.

This fund shall be used to provide an award for one or more students who are majoring in Computer Science or Computer Science and Engineering in the Bourns College of Engineering.

Selection and Guidelines:

Administered by the Bourns College of Engineering, and in accordance with establish University policy, the Payne Scholar must:
*Be an undergraduate student in the Bourns College of Engineering
*Be working towards a degree in Computer Science or Computer Science and Engineering
*Have a minimum GPA of 2.5 or better
*Be a deserving individual as defined by the Bourns College of Engineering
