History and Purpose:



The William Henry Willis Memorial Poetry Prize is an annual cash poetry prize to honor the memory of John Willis's father, William Henry Willis, who respected education and wrote poetry in his spare time. The award is to recognize an original poem from a UCR student which best uses whimsy and inventive wordplay to capture the warmth of the human spirit. Finalists are selected by a UCR Creative Writing committee and forwarded to the family for final selection.

This fund is to provide support for an annual prize to one or more undergraduate students excelling in the art of poetry writing.
