Purpose:

Undergraduate Student Support

History and Purpose:

The gift of a scholarship from Lecturer Sheldon Richman and the Deloitte Foundation will fund scholarships for entering pre-business freshmen.

Mr. Richman was the recipient of a Regents scholarship when he attended the University of California at Los Angeles as an undergraduate. The four year continuing support for him as a student made a significant impact on his university experience. Mr. Richman has remained involved in the education community having served as a lecturer in taxation here at UC Riverside and at Cal State University Fullerton. He has seen first hand the financial challenges our students face in meeting the raising costs of a higher education. It is through this gift that he and his wife want to help provide a level of on-going support for an accounting student throughout his/her four years.

The A. Gary Anderson Graduate School of Management has received substantial gifts from Lecturer of Accounting Sheldon Richman. The Deloitte Foundation matched these gifts. The gift will be used to fund a four-year commitment to an entering freshman in pre-business each year starting in the fall of 2008. Award recipients will receive $1,000 every year over their four years at UCR, as long as they maintain their grades and continue progress towards a degree in business with an emphasis in accounting. The balance of the funds will be used to build an endowment to continue this program in perpetuity. This is the first time AGSM has had a four-year award to offer, and the scholarship will be used as a recruiting tool for prospective high-achieving freshmen.

"Shel Richman's gift for scholarships is a generous investment in the future," AGSM Dean David W. Stewart said. "AGSM and UCR cannot realize their mission of developing the next generation of educated leaders for business and for society without the support of individuals like Shel. This gift is a wonderful example for the community of what we must all do to assure our future success as a society."

Richman has served as a lecturer for the past three years at AGSM, teaching courses in taxation each spring quarter. He received his bachelor's degree in business administration from UCLA, where he was a Regents Scholar. As a Scholar, he received a four-year commitment of financial support from the University of California. He has spent his business career as Partner in charge of the taxation practice at the Los Angeles office of the Big Four accounting firm of Deloitte. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Deloitte Foundation.

The Gift Funds shall be used to establish an endowment fund to be used for the benefit and support of an entering freshman in Pre-Business who has the intention of majoring in Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting. In determining such GPA, only courses in academic-oriented subjects (UCR catalogue designated "a-g" subject requirements) will be considered. Further, no grade in excess of 4.0 (such as might be possible in some Advanced Placement Courses) will be considered.
- Evidence significant financial need to pay for their undergraduate education.
