Fund:

Kalyn Smith-Tranquil'son Memorial Scholarship

Department:

LGBT Resource Center Dept D01175

Purpose:

Graduate or Undergraduate Student Support

History and Purpose:

Tranquil Calley created the Kalyn Smith-Tranquil'son Memorial Fund in 2003 in memory of her son, Kayln, who graduated from UCR. The fund is an emergency funding source for students who have been cut off financially from their families because of their sexual orientation, gender, perceived gender, or work with or for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. It provides these students with temporary support (for tuition, housing, books, or other living expenses) enabling them to stay in school through the quarter in which they are currently enrolled or in which they will be enrolled in next.

Selection and Guidelines:

UCR students must provide the following information to the Chancellor's Advisory Committee on the Status of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender (LGBT) and/or LGBT Resource Center staff who will review applications:
- Be a student in good academic standing;
- Identify as a member of the LGBT Community or be an "active" ally ("active" to be defined by the director of the LGBT Resource Center); and,
- Write an explanation explaining why they feel they are eligible for the funds and how much they feel they need to complete the quarter in which they are currently enrolled, or will be enrolled in next.
