Graduate or Undergraduate Student Support

History and Purpose:

Dr. Wilbur Mayhew played a key role in helping Philip Boyd establish the Deep Canyon Research Center, a desert and mountainous area reserve of nearly 17,000 acres located south of Palm Desert. The reserve boasts 46 reptile species, 228 birds, and 47 mammals and is part of the U.S. Mojave and Colorado Desert Biosphere Reserve. In 1958, Dr. Mayhew began bringing his classes to study at the reserve; he later served as the site manager from 1970 until his retirement in 1990. At an alumni reunion, after fondly reminiscing about their experiences at Deep Canyon, a group of students from the class of 1958 and Dr. Mayhew decided to visit the site once again. At the current site manager's suggestion, Dr. Mayhew, those former students and others set up the Dr. Wilbur L. Mayhew Endowed Scholarship for Boyd Deep Canyon Research Center, which helps fund graduate student research at Deep Canyon.
