Watkins Endowed Fund (Anna)

AVC:Dean of Students Dept D01164

Graduate Student Support

History and Purpose:

This fund was established in 1977 in memory of Anna D. Watkins, the wife of Gordon D. Watkins, first Provost at UC Riverside. Elleta Wild, President of Women Associates of Watkins House in 1978, sent memo to Chancellor Ivan Hinderaker advising him of the establishment of this Scholarship fund with a principal of $3000 from the dissolution of the Association. Stipulation was that each year the award would be given to a continuing woman student at UCR.

Gordon Samuel Watkins was the first provost of The University of California, Riverside. Dr. Watkins was a nationally known labor arbitrator and economic consultant and Dean of the College of Letters and Science at UCR when he was selected to head the proposed new campus at Riverside in 1949. He succeeded brilliantly in this triple task of establishing the College, welding it with the existing Citrus Experiment Station, and assuring public acceptance of this new institution in the life of Riverside.
