History and Purpose:

Dr. Ernest L. Propes was born in Irvington, Illinois in 1924. After service as a navigator in the U.S. Army Air Corps during the Second World War, he received his M.D. in 1953 from the University of Illinois. He was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in 1968. Dr. Propes, a specialist in the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, practiced in the communities of Compton, Bellflower, San Diego, and San Bernardino before his retirement in 1986.

A strong advocate of education, Dr. Propes established the Ernest L. Propes Trust in 1993; upon his death in 2002, funds from the trust were used to establish the Ernest L. Propes Endowed Graduate Fellowship at the University of California, Riverside. Income made available from this fund may be for graduate fellowships, or added to any existing endowed graduate fellowship.
