Fund: Eva S. Orbach Endowment for the First Position for Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Department: Intercollegiate Athletics D01099 Purpose: Undergraduate Student Support History and Purpose: Eva Orbach is the wife of Raymond L. Orbach, UCR's Chancellor from 1992-2002. She began to play tennis after their third child went to nursery school. She played often, worked hard at improving her game, and started to compete locally. When Ray spent a sabbatical year at Tel Aviv University in Israel, Eva played on the campus courts and was approached by the coach of the team who asked if she were a student. She told him that her husband was a visiting Guggenheim Fellow, but that she was taking a course in Biblical Archaeology. With that he recruited her to the University team where she enjoyed touring the country and playing competitively for the year of their stay. When the Orbachs returned home to Pacific Palisades, Eva taught tennis in a local park near their home and has continued to enjoy the sport. To celebrate her 60th birthday, Chancellor Orbach created the Eva S. Orbach Endowment for the First Position for Women's Intercollegiate Tennis to honor his wife and her passion for the sport of tennis. Selection and Guidelines: The Eva S. Orbach award is given to the first position member on the women's Highlander Tennis team. The recipient is chosen by the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. There is no application procedure for students. Coaches and the Director of Athletics will notify the student award recipients.
