Purpose:

Undergraduate Student Support

History and Purpose:

William R. Johnson, Jr., President of Johnson Machinery and a native of Riverside, established the S. Sue Johnson Endowed Scholarship in 1986 to honor his wife, Sue, who is a UCR alumna. William inherited his high regard for education from his father and shares this profound commitment with his wife, Sue. She, a UCR Foundation Trustee and the past chair of the Board of Regents of the University of California, comes from a family dedicated to higher education. Her grandfather, P. Boyd Smith, founded California Baptist College. Her father, S.E. Boyd Smith, was a Renaissance Historian of Music who started California Baptist's Music Department. "We have always valued higher education because it enriches lives forever - of those who pursue it, and in the regions where graduates live and work," said Sue. The scholarship aids students from Riverside, Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, San Bernardino, and Imperial counties who demonstrate financial need.
