Morris & Gloria Garber Endowment in Statistics

Department:

Statistics

Purpose:

Graduate Student Support

History and Purpose:

Dr. Morris Garber was a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Statistics as well as former head of the UC Riverside Biometrical Lab. He became the first director of UCR's Computing Center after he convinced the university that it needed to invest in computers during the 1960s. Because of job cuts in the 1970s, Garber volunteered to give up his computer title and returned to teaching and research in the Department of Statistics.

In 1999 Dr. Garber and his wife Gloria created The Morris J. and Gloria R. Garber Fund in Statistics to, as they wrote, "reaffirm UCR's proud tradition of academic excellence, and in consideration of the generosity of other friends of the campus." Dr. Garber passed away on January 22, 2004; Mrs. Garber passed away on April 23, 2006. Donations in their memory have augmented the fund.

Selection and Guidelines:

The Chair of the Statistics Department can use the fund's income in any way that serves and is visible to the students in the department, such as fellowships for graduate students and equipment purchases.
