Gartzke Memorial Endowed Scholarship in memory of Roger's maternal grandfather. Frederick E. Gartzke was dedicated to public service and interested in higher education. He felt that it was each person's responsibility to keep moving and improving, to make things better. Trained as an engineer, Mr. Gartzke quite literally built the town of Iowa City, and even at age 90, he was known and respected by many of the city's citizens. When he passed away, the banner of his obituary stated, "He built a city." Gartzke Memorial Scholarships are awarded to entering freshman with high academic quality and potential, who have financial need. Students may be in either the Bourns College of Engineering, or Environmental Science majors in the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences.
