Fund: The Bourns Foundation Engineering Scholarship Endowment Fund Department: COE Scholarships: Gifts: Endowments D02130 Purpose: Undergraduate Student Support History and Purpose: The Bourns Foundation was created in 1956 as a non-profit corporation to support charitable and educational causes. Today, Gordon L. Bourns, Chairman and CEO of Bourns, Inc. and his sisters Linda Hill, Anita Macbeth and Denise Moyles serve as directors for The Bourns Foundation. In 1990, The Bourns Foundation created The Bourns Foundation Engineering Scholarship Endowment Fund to provide financial assistance to students in the Marlan and Rosemary Bourns College of Engineering. The scholarship helps to defray costs associated with student registration and fees. In 1994, to encourage the development of a local base of engineering talent and resources, The Bourns Foundation pledged a generous gift to the UC Riverside Foundation to help found a College of Engineering. To honor the founders of Bourns Inc., the new college was named the Marlan and Rosemary Bourns College of Engineering. Each year, The Bourns Scholarship is awarded to an engineering undergraduate to assure that UCR's outstanding students will receive support to focus on their studies. Gordon Bourns has given most generously of his time and expertise to UCR as well. He has been a Trustee on the UCR Foundation Board since 1984, serving as chair from 1997 to 1999. In 1987 he founded UCR's Bourns Science and Engineering Day, an outreach program for regional high school students interested in science and engineering. He is a member of the Marlan and Rosemary Bourns College of Engineering Advisory Board. In 2000 Gordon and Jill Bourns, on behalf of the Bourns family and Foundation, were made inaugural Laureates at UCR to honor their philanthropy. This Fund shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to undergraduate students in the Bourns College of Engineering. Selection and Guidelines: The Bourns College of Engineering will administer this scholarship. Eligible students must be full-time UCR students majoring in Engineering, freshman through junior status, demonstrate financial need, and be enrolled in 12 or more units. Financial Aid will disburse scholarship money annually to recipients, whom the Dean of The Marlan and Rosemary Bourns College of Engineering will select.
