History and Purpose:

Gordon Blunden was a well-regarded banker. In 1956 he founded the Provident Savings Bank and during the next four decades, guided its growth to the second largest financial institution in Riverside County. Mr. Blunden was an avid flyer, a navigator in the South Pacific during World War II, and he was a tireless community volunteer, actively participating in the work of the Kiwanis Club of Riverside, the United Way and the Riverside Chambers of Commerce.

In 1994, Mr. Blunden's son, Craig, an alumnus of UCR, created the Gordon A. Blunden/ Provident Savings Bank Endowed Business Scholarship in The A. Gary Anderson Graduate School of Management to honor his father. The scholarship assists outstanding and qualified undergraduate business and graduate MBA students in AGSM.

Gordon Blunden passed away in 1996.

The Gift Funds shall be used to establish an endowment fund ("Fund") to be used for the benefit and support of undergraduate and graduate business administration students in the School of Business Administration at the direction of the Dean, in accordance with established University Policy.

Selection and Guidelines:

- Applicants must submit 10 page paper on a current banking issue such as the Community Reinvestment Act, Banking Credit crisis or other approved topics. And, if invited, make a presentation to the Provident Savings Bank Board.
- Recipient recommendations will be made by the SOBA Scholarship Committee.
- The awards shall be announced in the Spring of each year.
- The awards will be presented by the Dean of SOBA, or his/her designee, and, when available, the Chairman of Provident Savings Bank
- Preference will be given to incoming or current UCR business students having graduated from a Riverside County High School.

Modified Selection Criteria (2018):
- Preference shall be given to incoming or current UCR School of Business graduate students who have graduated from a Riverside County high school.
- Scholarship recipients shall be selected by the School of Business Scholarship Committee.
- More than one scholarship may be awarded each year.
- The scholarship recipients shall be announced in the fall quarter of each year.
- The scholarships shall be presented by the Dean of the School of Business or his/her designee and, when available, the Chairman of Provident Bank.
