Babbage played a monumental role in founding and sustaining the UC Riverside campus. In 1948, then Assemblyman Babbage drafted the legislation which made the Riverside campus a reality. He was relentless in his pursuit of this dream after the initial vote in the Assembly for the funding of the new campus failed by 35-23. His persistence ultimately resulted in a final vote of 34-32. Mr. Babbage was an inaugural Trustee of the UC Riverside Foundation Board of Trustees and served as its chairman from 1989 until his death in 1990. Established by John Babbage and other donors on September 22, 1987, the John D. Babbage Scholarship Fund enables outstanding students in the sciences to attend UCR's Bourns College of Engineering. Recipients are designated Babbage Scholars. Selection and Guidelines: Recipient selected by Bourns College of Engineering committee.
