Fund: Richard M. Martin Scholarship Fund Department: Chemistry Dept D01054 Purpose: Undergraduate Student Support Background: Richard M. Martin was a student at UC Riverside during its early years and graduated with a B.A. degree in Chemistry in 1959. He attended graduate school at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and graduated with a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry in 1963. He then went on to Harvard university on a National Institute of Health Postdoctoral Fellowship, working in the Group of Chemistry Professor Dudley Herschbach. In 1965 he joined the Department of Chemistry at UCSB as a Professor of Chemistry. Other positions he held on sabbatical leaves were as Visiting Professor of Chemistry at Cambridge University in England and Visiting Professor at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics in Gottingen, Germany. He retired from UCSB in 1994. Purpose and Criteria: This Fund shall be used to provide scholarships for undergraduate students in the Chemistry Department at UC Riverside. This award shall be selected on the basis of merit or need. To be eligible, students must be enrolled full-time, be in good academic standing, and study chemistry as a major. Recipients of the award will be selected under the direction of the head of the Chemistry Department, or his/her designee, in accordance with established University policy. The head of the Chemistry Department or his/her designee may appoint a committee to review and select recipients from the pool of eligible candidates. In any year when there is no candidate who meets the eligibility criteria, the award may be held until a future year when there is an eligible recipient. In any year when more than one student stands out from the pool of eligible recipients, more than one award may be given provided there is sufficient funding.
