Gary Wanczuk Memorial Scholarship

Department:

Center for Conservation Biology

Purpose:

Undergraduate Student Support

History and Purpose:

The Gary Wanczuk Memorial Scholarship was established to preserve the memory of Gary Wanczuk, a member of an old ranching family from the Hemet area who became the Chair of the Western Riverside County Multiple Species Habitat Conservation Plan (MSHCP) Advisory Committee. His friends and family created a scholarship fund to honor his love of the land and his untiring efforts in bringing people together to find solutions to benefit environmental planning in Riverside County. The Gary Wanczuk Memorial Scholarship is awarded by the Center for Conservation Biology (CCB) to undergraduate students, who have demonstrated and show the potential to demonstrate contributions to conservation and/or environmental planning.

Selection and Guidelines:

The Wanczuk Memorial Scholarship is an annual competition issued during Spring quarter. Applicants must be full time undergraduate students at the University of California, Riverside, currently in their junior or senior year. The application packet includes an application form, a brief personal statement, a minimum of 2 letters of recommendation, and a recent copy of college transcripts. These forms will be made available on the CCB website (ccb.ucr.edu/undergrad.html). The applications are evaluated by a special subcommittee of the CCB's Steering Committee based on the following criteria: 1) Student's contribution to conservation and/or environmental planning in Riverside County, with special emphasis on collaborative planning efforts. 2) Conservation or planning-related coursework. 3) Other community-related experience. 4) Letters of recommendation. 5) Student's potential for future contributions to conservation and/or environmental planning as described in the personal statement. The award winner is announced the third Friday of June.
