Vicki L. Schechtman Scholarship

Vicki L. Schechtman Scholarship

Department:

CNAS Dean's Office

Purpose:

Graduate or Undergraduate Student Support

History and Purpose:

Dr. Vicki L. Schechtman was a graduate of Arizona State University. She received her MS from CSU Long Beach and her Ph.D. in neuroscience in 1987 from UCLA. A research scientist at the UCLA Brain Research Institute, Dr. Schechtman dedicated her career to pursuing advancements in the study of Sudden Death Infant Syndrome (SIDS).

Dr. Schechtman passed away in 1998 at the age of 42.

Dr. Schechtman's family created a scholarship to honor her memory as a daughter, mother, sister, and a woman in science. Awarded through the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, the Vickie L. Schechtman Scholarship supports a student who is pursuing a career in science, has conducted research, demonstrates financial need, and is actively involved in extracurricular activities related to their field of study as well as service to the community. All else being equal, the family prefers that the Schechtman Scholarship be awarded to a woman.

Selection and Guidelines:

Students must:
- Have financial need;
- Be majoring in one of the scientific disciplines;
- Submit an essay explaining their current work in science-related field, educational objectives, and career aspirations.

The family reviews the essays (identities of students withheld) with recommendations made to the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences.

All else being equal, the donors would prefer that the scholarship be awarded to a woman.
