In 1994, NASP Director Earl Sisto created the Gathering of the Tribes Scholarship with the profits from the Pow Wows as well as with gifts from private donors.

UCR student recipients must be:
- Active in the Native American community either on or off the campus;
- Involved in Native American Student Programs or Native American Students Association;
- Have financial need; and,
- Be in good academic standing at UCR.

Students apply through the Native American Students Programs. A committee of professors and staff involved with Native American Studies and student reviews makes the selections.
