Dr. Small was a zoology major at UCR graduating in 1961 with his classmates and friend, Dr. Fred Bryant, now an orthodontist practicing in Riverside. The Smalls have supported UCR since 1977. Last year, Richard Small and Fred Bryant started the Bryant-Small Scholarship to benefit a deserving medical student.

Selection and Guidelines:

This fund will provide for scholarship assistance to a second year medical student who has demonstrated leadership, special aptitude for and a deep commitment to the study of medicine. This award will be administered by the Dean of the School of Medicine.

It is the donor's preference that the Dean selects the recipient(s) with the consultation of a faculty committee. The award should go to a second year medical student who has demonstrated leadership and a deep commitment to the study of medicine. The recipient should have a special aptitude for the study of medicine. While academic performance may be taken into consideration, it should not be the only criteria for selecting the recipient. The donor's preference is that students not be required to write an essay to apply for the scholarship.

There is no application procedure for students. Personnel from the UCR School of Medicine will notify the student award recipients.
