History and Purpose:

Dr. Nathaniel Coleman and his wife Elizabeth (Betty) came to Riverside to join UCR's faculty in 1961.

Dr. Coleman was a Professor of Soil Chemistry in the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences and became a central figure in the development of the Riverside campus. He contributed extensively to the campus, serving as chair of his department until 1965 and serving on the Committee on Budget and Interdepartmental Relations concurrently. From 1966-1968, he served as chair of the Riverside Division of the Academic Senate. In 1968, he also became Associate Dean of the College of Biological and Agricultural Sciences, where he had a profound influence on the development of the college. Colleagues write: "In spite of his willingness to make the difficult decisions and to support the unpopular position, few men receive more admiration and affection than he enjoyed." An expert on soil chemistry, Dr. Coleman's research underlies improvements and advancement in the cultivation and use of soil today.

Elizabeth Coleman came to Riverside with her own projects and was active in University Affiliates and Town & Gown. When Dr. Coleman passed away in 1973, Mrs. Coleman created The Nathaniel T. Coleman Scholarship to honor his memory. Three scholarships are awarded each year, with one designated to a fifth-year student in Biomedical Sciences.

In June 2007, the fund reached endowment level and was renamed the Nathaniel T. Coleman Endowed Scholarship with the UC Regents.
